Metrorrhagia

Metrorrhagia is uterine bleeding at irregular intervals, mostly between the expected menstrual periods. Metrorrhagia can also be defined as 'off schedule' bleeding. The bleeding, usually of normal or slight, occurs at either irregular or regular intervals apart from the normal menstrual flow.

Cause

It can be caused by a hormonal imbalance (hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism); pregnancy disorder; cervical lesions; medications (birth control pills, corticosteroids, hypothalamic depressants, anticholinergics, anticoagulants); uterine fibroids; functional ovarian; polyps ;carcinoma of the vagina, cervix, endometrium or ovary; renal or liver disease; coagulation disorders; anabolic steroid use; IUDs or other trauma.

Treatment

  • Ensure the bleeding is coming from the vagina and not the urine or rectum. A tampon may be used to make sure bleeding is indeed from the vagina.
  • For heavy bleeding, take plenty of rest. Note the number of pads or tampons used.
  • Take proper medication from doctor.
